About Sliding Scale Pricing

I believe that every person who gives birth should have access to support and care. To make accessing birth and postpartum support more equitable, my rates are priced with a sliding scale model and determined by each unique client. I trust that my clients know and understand their financial situation and have considered the role and value of a postpartum doula. With this in mind, I trust my clients to choose the rate that is most feasible for their individual reality.

People often ask whether or not I think people will choose a lower rate on the scale when they can afford a higher rate, and my answer is no. I do not operate from a scarcity mindset, but rather I believe that my clients have the autonomy to decide what is best for their needs. Sliding scale is rooted in economic justice, and I am happy to offer my services with such pricing because it means I can provide care for my clients at rates they can afford and earn a livable wage.

I know that talking about money can be stressful, but our income is not something to be ashamed of. We are more than our financial situation, employment status, and material reality. I am here to answer any questions or concerns you may have, and I am happy to have an in-depth conversation with you regarding rates if that would be helpful.

Determining Your Rate

I recognize that determining your rate based on sliding scale prices may be overwhelming. Ultimately, the rate you decide should feel feasible. Here are some guidelines that may be useful:

My hourly rate is a sliding scale of $50 to $150, which is admittedly a large range. It can be helpful to think about this pricing in levels:

Level 1: $50-$75

Level 2: $75-$100

Level 3: $100-$150

  • I will also work with folks who pay less than the Level 1 rate. Please reach out to me if cost is a barrier to your care.

When determining a sliding scale rate to pay, I often turn to The Green Bottle Method by Alexis J. Cunningfolk. This is a great visual to help decide which level of pricing may best suit you and your circumstances.

  • If you are struggling financially, currently unemployed, and not meeting your needs, the Level 1 pricing (or a lower agreed-upon rate) is likely your best match.

  • If you sometimes stress about finances but mostly meet your needs, Level 2 pricing is a good fit. You may fit into this category if you asked family or friends for help in paying for doula care, or if you were unsure that the cost of a doula made sense for your fiscal situation.

  • If you do not worry about meeting your needs, you have access to familial wealth, or budgeted and accounted for doula care while preparing for a child, Level 3 is a strong choice. Level 3 pricing also makes sense if your insurance provider or employer will cover the cost of or reimburse you for postpartum care.

Payment Schedule

I require a 50% deposit when you reserve my services. I understand that this may not be feasible, and I am happy to work with you to create a payment plan that works for you and your family. Typically I require a 50% deposit and then weekly payment each week services are rendered.

For example:

You determine that you will pay a Level 1 rate of $65 per hour and book me for 8 weeks in April and May. You decide that 20 hours of care each week is best for you and your needs. The total cost for my services would be $10,400. This means $5,200 would be due as a deposit when you reserve my services, and during the 8 weeks when care is provided, I would receive $650 weekly until the remainder of the balance is paid and our contract is fulfilled.

However, I have also worked with clients who pay the 50% deposit to secure my services, and then pay the agreed-upon hourly rate within 24 hours of the date they were provided beginning once the initial deposit was exhausted (instead of a weekly rate). Another alternative option would be to space the 50% payment throughout pregnancy rather than a one-time payment. We can also design a payment plan that works for you. I love getting creative and am flexible; my goal is to make my services accessible and to ensure that you feel supported.
